Four added to Hall of Fame
Fulton County High School added four new members to their Athletic Hall of Fame during ceremonies held recently at Sanger Field.
During festivities before the Pilots last home football game, former standout athletes
Cubb Stokes, Rick Major, Jim Somerfield and the late Andra’ Curtis were honored with their induction.
Stokes is a 1970 graduate at Fulton County, where he played baseball, football and basketball.
During his Senior year, Stokes was the team Captain in both baseball and basketball, and was named the Pilots “Athlete of the Year”.
Following graduation, Stokes continued his baseball playing career at the University of Tennessee, where he was the Volunteers team Captain his Senior season.
Stokes was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies and played for a period of time in their organization.
Major is a 1987 graduate who was on the basketball and track team, along with four years on the Pilots football team.
He was the co-Captain of the Pilots football team his Senior season, and garnered such accolades as induction into the “Outstanding High School Athletes of America”, along with a “U.S. National Football Award” winner and “Academic All-American”.
After graduation, Major played four years of football at Centre College in Danville.
He now serves as an assistant football coach with the Pilots, and is the founder of the highly successful youth football program within the school system.
Somerfield is a 1987 graduate, who was an All-State Honorable Mention and selection to the All-WKC Team his Senior year.
Against South Fulton his Senior year, Somerfield intercepted a pass and ran for a 96-yard touchdown, which stood as a Pilots record for many years.
The late Andra’ Curtis graduated in 1986, and was on the baseball team for three years, basketball one year and football four years.
Curtis was a standout lineman on both offense and defense, and was named to the All-WKC Team his Senior year, along with being selected as an “Outstanding High School Athlete in America”.
After graduation and post secondary education, Curtis returned to Fulton County to serve as an assistant coach from 1991 through 1995 under head coach David Gallagher.
