NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR DEC. 31, 2024
December 31, 2024
FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE, NWS Paducah -
We've hoisted a Wind Advisory for much of the area today, Tues., Dec. 31, 2024 from 8 AM to 5 PM CST. Most areas will see a few hours of 35-45 mph gusts from the W-NW. With the very soggy soils, we wouldn't be shocked if we have issues with uprooted trees in addition to small limbs down and flying holiday decor.
We also wanted to provide an update on the potential winter storm and Arctic blast for early next week. In short, there hasn't been a lot of change in our thinking. It's just too early to start pinning down specific precipitation types or amounts. Things will become clearer in the next few days.
Right now, there look to be three different possibilities: 1) A fairly widespread snowstorm; 2) wintry mix with freezing rain glazing or sleet/snow accumulations; or 3) mostly rain with maybe some icing issues north of Interstate 64. So while the details are still murky, the possibility of travel impacts of some kind look to be increasing, whether it is from snow, ice, or sleet or a combo of all of them!
Beyond this weekend, the pattern looks quite cold, with single digit or subzero wind chills a possibility. There may be some additional winter weather to watch as several models show clipper systems pushing through the region with light snow.
Overall, it looks to be an interesting start (it's usually not good when a meteorologist says the weather looks interesting!) to 2025.
We'll continue to provide updates in the coming days as the forecast evolves.
Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Derrick Snyder
